Pincushion Addict

5 pincushions

Hi guys! Thanks for your constant compliments on my craft works.
You sure make me feel like I am somehow doing something
that makes this blog worth coming to for you. Special thanks
to those of you who gave me helpful links and advice on
how to make pdfs. I really am going to make the tutorial once
I create the pdfs. In the meantime, let me show you
some pincushion I've made.

Pincushion

I got done with the winter session yesterday.
I was so happy that I felt like creating something
new, so I made five pincushions!!

Pincushion

I had some fun with free motion stitches. It was totally
random, but I love the looks the randomness created.
Initially, I was going to make pincushions using only scraps.

Pincushion

But I actually used some fabric that isn't from my scrappy
collection... but only "some", mostly scraps! That's a good thing.

Pincushion

Don't you just have some fabric that you seriously adore
and is not available anymore anywhere that you can
treasure teeny tiny scraps of it? I have some, and they
played a lot of roles in this pincushion project.

Pincushion

For instance, these chickens!! So super duper cute!!
And the "kitchen" textile fabric too. I looked for
those everywhere on the Internet, but they are pretty
much not available anymore..(sigh)

Pincushion

Oh for all the pincushions I used some cute ribbons
I found in Japan, and I think it was such a great way
to use them. They really stand out with pincushions.

Pincushion

This is a fun one too.
I wanted to use pink thread that is much softer in color,
but this bright pink one was the only pink thread spool I had.
But I think it turned out kinda interesting.

Pincushion

I kinda like the backing too - pale pink felt.

Pincushion

The last one is this guy. Looks familiar?
Yup! This is sort of a tiny version of the penguin quilt!
This penguin was a little jealous because other penguins
that became part of the quilt got too much attention.

Pincushion

'I don't wanna be stuck in here. Make something with me too!'
Alright. That's how it turned out to be a pincushion ;)
All these five pincushions have been listed in my shop ;)

By the way, have you noticed I used lots of gray textile fabric
for the pincushions? Do you know where it came from...?

I printed on fabric!

I printed it out !!!!!!!!!!!
Printing my own fabric was something I've wanted to
do for the longest period of time. But when I found
out that I need bubble jet set and bubble jet rinse
to make the dream come true, I kinda got discouraged
feeling how tiring and time-consuming it actually is
to print your own things on fabric at home.

But I was reading this great website on it and
learned that I CAN print on fabric using the ink-jet
printer without the extra items IF I am OK with
the printed fabric unwashable.

I was so happy to find out about this possibility,
so I ran into Joann today and grabbed more solid fabric!

Also, I went to an estate sale this morning
and got LOTS of vintage iron transfer embroidery patterns.
I was way too excited about those and got way too many.
There are some I really love and can't part with, but I have
lots of them that I have more than one.
If you're interested in any of these, e-mail me.

Thanks for coming & reading!

  1. I can totally spot your style in whatever project you make. Bold graphics, strips...when you post things, I can just tell that you made them. I like your style. I guess that's why I keep coming back to see what you've made. :)

  5. Love the pin cushions! Each one is so unique and interesting to look at with the different scraps you used and the different stitching. I have some of that printable fabric, but have been afraid to use it, so I will check out that HP site.

  6. The pink thread is my favorite and closely followed by the penguins. I made my first pin cushion yesterday. My husband is a bit tired of pins sliding across the floor when they fall...

  7. Cute pincushions. LOVE all of your fabrics! I've printed labels on fabric on my printer before but what a clever idea to print fabric to use in a project!

  8. I love the embroidery patterns; especially the roosters! The pin cushions are adorable, too. I've been wanting to print on fabric, too, but have been apprehensive. Maybe I'll jump in because yours turned out great!

  11. Nice pincushions! My step-daughter is going to Japan for the first time in April and I have asked her to bring me back some fabric from there. They will be visiting Tokyo, Nagoya and a few other smaller towns. What are the names of some stores that sell Japanese fabric? I would appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks,

  12. Thanks everyone!

How nice is it that your step-daughter is going to visit many places in Japan! If she gets to go to Nippori in Tokyo, there will be lots and lots of fabric warehouses near the JR station, but I bet she wouldn't be interested in the place - pretty boring if you don't care about fabric. The major chain fabric stores just like Joann here are Yuzawaya and Okadaya. Yuzawaya has great sales. Hope this helps!

  13. The pincushions are so cute. I've been thinking about making some pincushions for the longest time. There are so many cute patterns out there.

I love the iron on transfers. I used to embroider with those as a child. They were so much fun.

  14. You are going to do a PDF file on your teapot pattern? How does one do that? I also wanted to do a tutorial that way so that t doesn't take up too much blog room. It seems so undoable for me. Thanks for sharing and for making it fun to blog. Linda

  17. I have really enjoyed reading this post. I loooove the pincushions and thanks, thanks! for the info on printing your own designs on fabric with a home printer. I really can't wait to have some time and experiment. It is so exciting! Love your blog and the things you make.

  19. Hi, I know this is kind of late - er, just a little! - but I found your teapot tutorial and have been plotting to make it for my Aunt who is a tea fanatic and not doing too well healthwise. Anyway, as I came back to look at the pattern to help me figure out how/which/what fabric to buy I came across your stitchery patterns. I LOVE the one with the little kittens doing the 'days of the week' chores. Are you selling them? It sounded in your post like you might be convinced to part with one or two, and I have 7 lovely floursack towels hiding in my dresser waiting to become a "so old it's hip" gift for my 24 year old daughter who is just getting her first apartment. If you still have it please email me!
    Thanks,
    Lisa in Georgia.
Oooooh, and I made your fabric basket earlier this week for my mom...she LOVES it!! Thanks!

  21. Just ordered the book and silk screening kit. Can you tell me what kind of printer you have? Your blog is such an inspiration! You're a very gifted woman.

    1. Hi there! I used a standard Canon printer to print out the fabric, but I've found it is much better to silk-screen instead of printing directly to the fabric. If you silk-screen your fabric, the ink is permanent and will not spear with water. Fabrics printed by a standard printer will smear with water, and colors aren't as vivid.

Thank you for your lovely comment! Good luck on silk-screening ;)
