I'm so glad Amanda and Angela started such a fun quilt-along.
Basically if you want to join this QAL, buy this awesome book,
'The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt" that has 111 block patterns,
and make two blocks a week on your pace. Even if you are not into
traditional quilts making, I promise you'll find this book
very inspirational. All 111 blocks are pretty simple with an
exception of a few. Not bad. I am already loving this QAL
partly because I enjoy making a different block at a time
rater than making the same blocks repeatedly so that I am
learning each time I make a block. So fun!
I decided to make blocks in order, so here is my take
on No.1 block pattern in the book. Considering how
simple this block is, I struggled a quite bit. I thought
I can calculate measurements in the head so I didn't
care to use templates on the CD enclosed in the book,
but after two attempts that resulted in failures, I
gave up and printed out the templates and finally
got it work. phew. See? I am learning!
Here is No.2. This was a lot simpler than the
first one, but I have to admit I still messed up
the first time. I really want to get better at
making traditional blocks.
I skipped No.3 block because it is a basket pattern
that has a curvy handle. You know how hard I try to
stay away from curvy seams. I'll come back to No.3
after getting better at making blocks. No.4 (above)
was the easiest of all.
So far all my blocks have been a combination of
the red solid + Heather Ross print + Suzuko Koseki
Print + other, not that I had planned it this way.
I'll go with this color range until I get tired of it.
Thanks for letting me share these blocks with you :)
Hope you are having a lovely Monday!
I love the 4th one! I assume that you sew the strips then cut them and sew them into a block! I have not learned much about traditional quilting, I will have to check this book out!
ReplyDeleteYou did an awesome job!
ReplyDeletep.s. Love the Heather bike fabric ;)
Love your blocks so far. Having a great Monday, not that work is over with :)
ReplyDeleteAlways gorgeous and the learning along the way means you are human. I still think u r superwoman though!
ReplyDeletesounds like a lot of fun~
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fun creative book and your blocks are adorable!
ReplyDeleteI am doing this same quilt. The curve handle isn't that bad. I have it set and ready to go, but I haven't attempted to sew it on yet.....!
ReplyDeleteI love your take on traditional blocks - your fabric choices make them fresh and modern. So pretty!
ReplyDeleteThese are really exciting. I love what Lynne (Lily's Quilts) is doing too. I can't believe I'm considering starting a traditional quilt sampler project!
ReplyDeleteThey're all so cute!!! But #1 really steals my heart....b/w the van and the word print, I love it!
ReplyDeleteHave fun with this quilt along...I'm too chicken to commit and go for it, so I'll have fun looking at your pics. :)
You have done such a nice job with the blocks!
ReplyDeleteI finished this quilt earlier this year. I have it as my header currently. I love the quilt. You are right it was fun to do different blocks every months. I did it through a quilt shop. Your will be fun to watch the progression! Great job.
ReplyDeleteyour blocks convinced me to try the quilt along too. I blogged about you again today. Love your blocks and fabric choices.
ReplyDeleteWell I am really jealous of your blocks - I mean I like mine but your fabric choices are just making those blocks have such a definite pink penguin look which I love so much. Tamika's have the same and I know Kerry's will have the same too - I wonder if we can persuade Amy to join in and see what fabrics she would choose - oooh and Penny too, now that woman can do scrappy really really well!
ReplyDeleteI have just seen what Lynne is written and she is right! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lynne too..I love the fabric combinations you choose to make the blocks yours! Keep it up..I am really anticipating the next few.
ReplyDeleteWhat a super quilt along. I took a peek at the book and I am smitten. I'm not a quilter myself but this book really struck a cord with me. I love the idea of older generations passing their knowledge and values on to the next generation.
ReplyDeleteI love your blocks so far! I'm sticking to a pretty limited colour palette, but I'm definitely in the minority over at the quilt along. Can't wait for my book to arrive so I can start making headway!
ReplyDeleteLovely quilt
ReplyDeleteI know I'm in trouble now. If you are doing this and Lynne is doing it and then if you get Penny and the others to join in, I'm going to feel like the Farmer's Wife is hitting me over the head with her rolling pin to join in. :-)
ReplyDeleteI enjoy seeing this project done in contemporary fabrics. Sounds like you are enjoying this project as much as I am. I too enjoy doing a different block every time.
ReplyDeleteYou can always fake it and applique the curved handle. Lori Holt has a way to make curved handles I really like, You applique it like any other piece really. Just a thought. I'm interested in how your quilt will turn out using YOUR fabrics and not trying to copy the book. My Dear Jane quilt flopped on me because I tried to duplicate the original and I don't really care for those fabrics. So I wasn't true to myself. And I lost interest....Glad to see you are approaching this pattern with you in mind.
ReplyDeleteI love sampler quilts and you're off to a good start on this one!....of course I adore all of the fabric you have chosen and I know it will be spectacular when complete...although i think that the process is just as fun as the finished product when making a sampler:)
ReplyDeleteIf you are nervous about the appliqué basket handle right now... Maybe you could replace it with ric-arc instead?...just a suggestion.
Either way....I love it already:)
Can't wait to see more...
xx
Lori
Whoops...that was sopossed to say ric-rac...lol!
ReplyDeleteLovely blocks, so different from the original with your choice of fabrics but so modern. Thanks for the info, I will try to join the quilt along. I received the book as a present from my hubby a few years back.
ReplyDeleteSo cute. My number 4 looks very similar.
ReplyDeleteayumi! these are just so delicious looking!!! beautiful work.
ReplyDeleteayumi,
ReplyDeleteI think you've got me inspired enough to try this... I'm going to look for the book immediately... such beautiful blocks! thank you! xo amy
Loving the 4th block (the others are pretty great too). And fantastic fabrics too
ReplyDeleteAyumi, your blocks are wonderful and very fun! Enjoy the quilt-along!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your quilt. I am making this quilt now through a BOM class at my favorite quilt store. I am using CIVIL WAR prints and I really like the blocks so far. I have more than half the blocks finished.
ReplyDeletei thought i already left a comment on this one, but i guess not. well you, Tamiko, Lynne, and Kerry have me convinced. i just have to impatiently wait for the book to come from another library.....
ReplyDeleteThat book looks amazing and I love how even when you are quilting very traditional patterns, they still have your voice and spirit.
ReplyDeleteLove your blocks, Ayumi, so fresh and fun. You make this seem like a fun quilt-along ; )

I'm going to have to join in! I love your fabric choices. This is a really good book.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I can't wait to see what your modern fabrics look like in a traditional block way! I never want to make those because the books are always calico prints, bleh. You have such great color vision!
ReplyDeleteOiii!!! Sou seguidora do seu blog e aqui do Brasil acompanho sempre. Tô passando para te desejar um ótimo fim de semana e dizer que meu cantinho está sempre esperando sua visita de braços abertos. Bjsss

I always love your choices in fabric. Whimsical and appealing!
ReplyDeleteThey were all nice to see. It's beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderfull, ayumi!!! I always dreamt to make such a longlasting quilt but... no QAL organized in my circle of quilters and I'm not motivated to do it alone...
ReplyDeleteAnd I love your choice of fabrics!!!
Dont forget to keep us posted with your blocks:)
I like the last one. It has a great combination of colors and the design is simple but cute.
