Here is a set of 6 quilted place mats that I finished
last week! I am extremely satisfied with the outcome!!
Coming to this point is amazing to me. I've had
so many different ideas for this project
of which led me to spent too much time
on brainstorming, cutting out unnecessary pieces
of fabric, going back and forth to a fabric store.
At one point, this idea of quilted mats clicked me,
and I knew that I'd have to nail it.
I wanted each one of those to have a personality
that is different from others, so for each mat
I used a bias tape of a different color.
I really enjoyed hand-sewing it to the edges of
each placemat. One thing that I found and couldn't
believe was that the hand-sewing part was taking
me an hour per place mat. Oh my goodness.
I knew I am a bit slower side when it comes to
hand-sewing but didn't expect to be that slow. lol.
But I truly enjoyed each minute of it.
Some were done in the train.
Some were done while watching Dexter.
(I've been addicted to the show now!)
This project was like my way of saying
"Hey, I want to make a quilt, but I am scared!"
if you know what I mean.
I've been really inspired by beautiful
quilts popping up all over in the crafty blog world,
and I am itching to start making a quilt.
But you know how I am much more into
smaller projects like zakka items. An idea
of a big project scares me a little, but
I guess I wouldn't be able to find out
unless I gave a shot.
I'd really hate to see these placemats
go, but they will go find their new home
in Norway. I hope the recipient will
love them as much as I do..!!
Thanks for stopping by!!
Those placemats are beautiful. I love the colours. I think they would be perfect for a dinner in the garden on a warm summer evening :-)
ReplyDeleteI really love your placemats. They are similar but still different, a really beautiful summery set. Almost too lovely to use!
ReplyDeleteLove the colours! very cute! I've never been really into quilting - maybe because I have limited fabric to work on :P but seeing your work really inspire me to work on something - quilt ;).. maybe baby diaper changing mat?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, they're gorgeous! :)
they are gorgeous!!!!
ReplyDeleteI am so inspired by you blog, I have to say!!
So cool the placemats are going to Norway, that is where I live:)
Those placemats are really lovely. I like the white linen for a change from natural. As you know I make small things too, the idea of a whole quilt is just... well not something I'm likely to do!
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could try a baby size quilt next?
Oh the horror of a project that meant going back and forth to a fabric store!! :D
Well done.
Cheers,
AJ
They are so pretty!!! :)
ReplyDeleteThose placemats are beautiful!! Compliment!
ReplyDeleteI like all yours works!

Very Nice... Will make any table look inviting.
ReplyDeleteThese are so pretty! I love the fabrics you use, I MUST find some like them...
ReplyDeleteoh so pretty!
ReplyDeleteWell done with the placemats. Don't be afraid to quilt - start with a lap size or a child's quilt and have some fun with it. You are already a creative spirit the rest will happen.
ReplyDeleteDo it! Just jump in and make a quilt! I agree with the others, just make a baby/lap quilt. I must warn you, though. You could become quite addicted. It happened to me...

They are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteZesty, fresh and gorgeous. I work on little projects for instant gratification and also work on an experimental first time proper quilt as a long term goal, you've nothing to lose!
ReplyDeletethese placemats are awesome...
ReplyDeleteIf you think about it this way - envision all those placemats put together - the piecing, the batting, the quilting, the binding.......you have *already* made a small quilt; just in pieces. *S*
ReplyDeleteWith your creativity, you will have NO problem with quilting.
The placemats are beautiful. Why don't you start with a very small quilt? I make 'babyquilts' for cradles.
ReplyDeleteI love your placemats! They are so bright and summery. I love how each placemat has a different colored binding. Hand sewing the binding down does take alot of time. You can also completely machine stitch the binding on. Now that you have made placemats you could always move onto a wall quilt or maybe a baby size quilt. Table toppers are also a nice manageable size.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm sure they will love these placemats. I would. Beautiful colors. Great job.
ReplyDeleteLove them! They are so cute. I am the same way about quilting, trying out smaller projects. I am also the same way about Dexter, I love that show!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! I love them!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful placemats! I have recently made a few quilts and have been inspired by you to go smaller. I need some new placemats!! Got some great fabric from the Quilt festival in chicago. How big are your placemats? They look like the perfect size.
ReplyDelete¡¡¡Son realmente precioso!!! y además no parecen difÃciles!!! Muy buena idea, y siempre me gustan los trabajos que haces!!! Un beso desde Argentina!!!
ReplyDeleteI am in love! Lucky person in Norway!
ReplyDeleteI'm in love too! These are stunning!
ReplyDeleteThey are so great Ayumi. And you SO CAN make a quilt! You've practically made one if each of those placemats was just pieced together! Just think about some slightly bigger pieces of fabric than you are used to using and you'll be there in no time!
ReplyDeleteThese are gorgeous! You've totally inspired me - I so want to make placemats, but I can't decide on a pattern. This looks like a great idea. And I echo those above - you can totally make a quilt! Your work is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWould you post a tutorial? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThese are so gorgeous and im loving all the wonderful fabric you used! You are an inspiration! Have a lovely merryhappy week and love to you!
ReplyDeleteGreat job Ayumi! Gorgeous work and they really do each have their own personality. Don't feel bad about slow hand sewing . . . I spent 5 hours hand sewing my binding onto a toddler sized quilt! Yikes! It was worth it though.
ReplyDeleteDon't be afraid of making a quilt! It's SO satisfying! What other sewing project actually cuddles with you when you're done, and keeps you warm and cozy? :-) Go for it!
cuteness! go for the quilt making, I'm sure you'll do awesome. For me the hardest part is making up my mind, too many choices!
ReplyDeleteOh, these are fabulous! I love your Penguin quilt... I'm sure you'll do an amazing job on your newest quilt :)
ReplyDeleteOh, your placemats turned out absolutely gorgeous! I'm in love, too! I really like how you used different colors of binding.
ReplyDeletewow! they are gorgeous! such vibrant colours and lovely design! i'm sure the recipient will be ecstatic to receive them :)
ReplyDeleteI'd love it if you post a tutorial. You could try making an apron out of quilt blocks, and then make a small quilt.
ReplyDeletelovely project, great fabric choices too. Thank you for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteWow those placemats look amazing!!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful, gorgeous and happy!
ReplyDeleteYou are ready for a quilt!!!
I can't believe you're not keeping them! They are delightful, and I don't usually like placemats. You will be wonderful at quilting!
ReplyDeleteVery cute placemats and really interesting fabrics you've used. Well done!
ReplyDeleteI just loved your blog, thank you so much for sharing a lot of diy. I'm just started to sew and I'm loving.

Those place mats are adorable! :)
ReplyDeleteThose are absolutely beautiful! I think you did a fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteyou are like me..
ReplyDeleteI always dream of making a quilt (made a baby quilt for my niece) but always stuck to small projects.
Big projects scares me and I would need to cut into my fave fabrics (which is pretty hard ).
I'm checking your old post to make sure that I don't send you any fabrics you already have ;)
Whats up, This is a wonderful summation, I located your blog checking google for any similar subject and observed this. I couldnt find as well significantly other tips and information on this posting, so it was fantastic to discover this one. I will almost certainly be returning to think about a number of other articles which you have written another time.
