Happy New Year - 2010!

Happy New Year


Yay, it's 2010! How did you all spend on your New Year Day?
This is the time of the year I miss being in Japan the most
because a new year day is like Christmas here, the most
celebrated holiday in Japan. It's been almost 7 years since I moved
to the states but I haven't yet gotten used to this lack of
Japanese festivity here on this day of the year. What helped me
keep from missing Japan too much today was lots and lots of sewing.




I just realized Sarah's 2nd birthday was coming up in a week,
so I made this twirly skirt based on this great tutorial by
Kara of Sweet & Salty. I simply fell in love with some of the skirts she
made (which you can see here in her post.)
I knew I would have to have my take at the tute!
It was absolutely worth it! The instruction was
very easy to follow and I'm truly in love with the outcome!



I picked up this matryoshka fabric a few years
ago at Nippori Textile Town in Japan, knowing that
it would make some really nice handmade gift for her.
I'm happy that it finally turned into something
I'm sure she will like.



I can tell already that it will definitely look fabulous
on her, and I can't wait to see pictures of her in it!




To tell the truth, I didn't have enough red polka dots
fabric for the hem, so I had to improvise by using
this vintage fabric for the back half of the hem.
I wasn't sure if this fabric will match the matryoshka
fabric, but I ended up thinking this fabric matches
better than the other red polka dots fabric.
Sometimes, I have to sew fabric together to really
find out if it's a good match or not.

Speaking of birthday gifts for Sarah, they have
always been handmade so far! (Hooray!)
For her zero year old birthday, I made these shoes
based on this famous tutorial by Joanna of Stardust Shoes.



And for her 1st birthday, I sewed up two more
baby cloth shoes with an enlarged pattern.




I find it so much fun to make things for
a little girl! So jealous of those of you
who have girls you can always make something for!
